Agricultural Equipment Lubrication Guide: Tractors, Combines and More

In farming, a mechanical breakdown during planting or harvest can cost thousands of dollars. A rigorous lubrication program with the right AMSOIL products dramatically reduces that risk.

Agricultural equipment operates under particularly hostile conditions: field dust, mud, constant water exposure during irrigation or wet-weather harvests, high drivetrain loads, and extreme temperature swings between Canadian winters and summers. A proper greasing program isn't a luxury — it's insurance against costly breakdowns at the worst possible time.

1. Key Grease Points on a Tractor

A modern agricultural tractor has on average 15 to 40 grease points depending on the model and attachments. The main ones include:

  • Steering kingpins and ball joints — exposed to mud and shock loads, require frequent regreasing
  • PTO driveshaft u-joints — subject to high variable speeds and loads
  • Front wheel and axle bearings — constant dust and moisture exposure
  • Hitch bar pivot joints — high cyclic loads during tillage operations
  • Center pivot (articulated tractors) — critical point under lateral load

AMSOIL Synthetic Water-Resistant Grease is particularly suited to points exposed to moisture and frequent pressure washing, thanks to its calcium sulfonate complex thickener that resists washout.

2. Combines: Critical Lubrication Points

A combine harvester is an extraordinarily complex machine with hundreds of moving components. During harvest, it runs continuously for 12 to 16 hours a day. Critical lubrication points include:

  • Cylinder and concave bearings — intense vibration and grain dust
  • Conveyor chains and rollers — continuous lubrication required
  • Rotor bearings (axial combines) — elevated temperature under continuous load
  • Header platform pivot joints — maximum exposure to moisture and mud
  • Unloading auger — bearings under intermittent but severe load

For muddy, wet field conditions, AMSOIL NLGI 2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease provides extreme pressure protection and resists throw-off under intense vibration.

3. Seeding and Tillage Equipment

Seeders, cultivators, harrows and plows share common characteristics: constant exposure to soil and moisture, high cyclic loads, and often outdoor storage through winter.

  • Harrow disc hubs — abrasive soil dust in direct contact
  • Seeder gauge wheel bearings — rolling directly through soil
  • Cultivator shank pivot arms — dynamic loads during field passes

AMSOIL Off-Road NLGI 1 Grease is particularly suited for centralized lubrication systems on seeding equipment, offering good mobility for automatic pumping while providing EP protection against abrasive particles.

4. Lubrication Schedule: Before, During and After Season

Before the Season (Spring — Planting)

  • Inspect all grease points — replace clogged fittings
  • Purge and renew grease in critical bearings
  • Check lubricant levels in transmissions and reducers
  • Grease all points before the first seasonal startup

During the Season

  • Follow the manufacturer's regreasing schedule (typically every 8 to 50 hours depending on the point)
  • Increase frequency in wet or muddy conditions
  • Visually inspect fittings after each pressure wash

After the Season (Storage)

  • Grease all points before storage to protect against winter corrosion
  • Use AMSOIL Water-Resistant Grease on points exposed to condensation
  • Protect hydraulic cylinder rods against corrosion

5. AMSOIL Products for Agriculture

Depending on equipment type and operating conditions, here are the AMSOIL formulations best suited to Canadian farming:

Summary: Agricultural Lubrication Program

  1. Identify all grease points on your equipment (manufacturer's manual)
  2. Choose the right grease based on water exposure, loads and temperatures
  3. Establish a regreasing schedule by equipment and season
  4. Systematically grease before winter storage
  5. Inspect fittings after every pressure wash

A well-structured lubrication program with AMSOIL synthetic greases can save you thousands of dollars in repairs and downtime during critical planting and harvest windows. Our team can help you build a customized program for your farm operation.
