How to Choose the Right Industrial Grease for Your Equipment
Thickener type, NLGI grade, water resistance or high-temperature performance — this guide helps you select the right AMSOIL formulation for every industrial application.
Selecting the right industrial grease is often overlooked. Yet using the wrong formulation can lead to premature bearing wear, seal failures and costly downtime. Here are the key criteria to consider before choosing a grease for your equipment.
1. Understanding NLGI Grades
The NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) grade defines grease consistency, ranging from 000 (semi-fluid) to 6 (very stiff). For most bearings and general industrial applications, NLGI Grade 2 is the standard. However:
- NLGI Grade 00 or 000 — centralized lubrication systems, open gears
- NLGI Grade 1 — centralized lubrication in cold weather, truck chassis
- NLGI Grade 2 — general purpose, bearings, universal joints
- NLGI Grade 3 — high-speed or high-temperature applications
The AMSOIL NLGI #1 Polymeric Grease and the NLGI #2 version are specifically designed for truck chassis and heavy equipment.
2. Assessing Water Exposure
If your equipment operates in wet conditions — excavation, agriculture, marine applications — water washout resistance is critical. Standard grease dilutes rapidly on contact with water, leaving components unprotected.
AMSOIL Synthetic Water-Resistant Grease is formulated with a calcium sulfonate complex thickener that adheres to metal surfaces even under direct water action, providing continuous protection in the most hostile environments.
3. Considering Operating Temperatures
Every grease has an optimal temperature range. Outside this range, consistency changes and the protective film breaks down. Ask yourself:
- Do the equipment start in extreme cold (below -20 °C / -4 °F)?
- Are there high-temperature friction points (ovens, motors, compressors)?
- Are temperature cycles rapid and extreme?
For high-temperature applications, AMSOIL Synthetic High-Viscosity Lithium-Complex Grease offers superior thermal stability and excellent load-carrying capacity.
4. Accounting for Load and Speed
High-load applications (excavators, presses, drilling equipment) require greases with EP (Extreme-Pressure) additives that create a chemical barrier between metal surfaces under intense pressure. High-speed applications, such as alternators or electric motors, require a lighter grease with low shear resistance.
AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease is an excellent versatile option covering the majority of common industrial applications with its EP additives and wide temperature range.
5. Specialized Applications
Certain industries have specific regulatory or technical requirements:
- Food industry — AMSOIL X-Treme Synthetic Food-Grade Grease meets NSF H1 standards
- Off-road and heavy machinery — AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease provides maximum protection for equipment exposed to mud, shock and vibration
- Racing and high performance — AMSOIL DOMINATOR® Synthetic Racing Grease for extreme environments
Summary: Your Checklist
- What NLGI grade does the equipment manufacturer recommend?
- Is the equipment exposed to water or moisture?
- What are the minimum and maximum operating temperatures?
- Are there extreme loads or shocks involved?
- Are there any regulatory requirements (food grade, pharma, etc.)?
